NJC uk commercial cleaning

Press Release: 12th May 2006

Is your company at risk of theft by tailgaters?

According to Reuben Heppelthwaite of Not Just Cleaning Ltd, tailgating has become a significant challenge for cleaning companies working in large corporate office premises. Commercial properties contain expensive and easily portable items that are attractive to thieves.

“How many times have you swiped your card to enter your place of work and someone has followed behind you without swiping? The person behind you is a tailgater! They may not have authorised access to the building. This is not so much of a problem during the day. However, during the evening, when currently 76% of cleaning in the UK is carried out, tailgating can represent a substantial risk to security,” Mr Heppelthwaite commented.

“During the day, on site security or receptionists are likely to notice someone attempting to gain unauthorised access to your premises. It is also less likely that a tailgater and potential thief will try to commit their crime in broad daylight, with so many staff on site,” he continued.

According to Theale based Not Just Cleaning (NJC), to prevent tailgating and potential theft, it is essential that all cleaning staff are trained to deal with potential tailgaters and other security issues. If your cleaning contractor doesn't educate their staff about this potential threat, there is an increased risk of theft during the evening cleaning operations.

All NJC staff are trained to close the door as soon as they have entered, if someone is following them into the building. This would be regardless of the person’s appearance as tailgaters will dress smartly to masquerade as a member of office staff. If the follower does not have an entry card and asks to be let in, usually using the excuse of a forgotten card, NJC staff are trained to refuse entry and explain the reason why. If the person persists security or the police would be called for assistance.
